Fibres

OPEN 7 Days - 9 AM UNTIL 9 PM

Dyeing fibre is fun whether you dye with Natural or Easy Peasy Dyes.  My dyeing courses are a voyage of discovery. Whether it be a Natural or Easy Peasy Dye for wool or Easy Peasy Cotton Dyeing you can be certain that you will learn a great deal. The benefits of attending a dyeing course is to eliminate trial and error, maximise your results and ensure that your time and effort converts into the best dyeing results.

Each student is given an Ideas/ Project book in which they can write notes during the course and add to as they progress with their chosen craft.

Taking down dyeing notes is all part of understanding the ratio of quantities of fibre to dye and water, this has to be learnt, that is why a blank Ideas Project Notebook is given to you on the course. Your notes will be key to successful dyeing in the future.

Whichever course you choose, you keep what you have dyed, so if you have a specific project in mind, be sure to tell Sue when you book your course. A resume of typical courses are set out below so you have some idea about your course content.

All the courses are hands on, so do not wear your best outfit, be comfortable. Bring rubber gloves and apron.   A short 20 minute lunch will be provided.

If you would like to try a combination of methods, this is best done over a weekend. There is further information on accommodation available locally on this web site www.kentselhamvalley.co.uk

An EASY PEASY DYE COURSE: 4 hours tuition using Scarlet, Blue, and Yellow dyes on Wool tops and fleece, the challenge is to create as many colours as possible, dyeing one colour as well as random colours.  Pastel and in your face strong colours can be achieved as appropriate.  You will learn how to make up a dye stock, use it all for strong colours or use a syringe for the pastel shades.  Other dyeing techniques will be used according to need.

Price: £100.00 per person (£25 per hour)

An Easy Peasy COTTON dye course on cotton fabric or yarn - Shibori or Tie Dye or Paint and Stencil.  Preparation is essential for this method of cold dyeing, so please talk to Sue.

Price: £100.00 per person (£25 per hour)

A NATURAL DYE COURSE: 4 hours tuition - Natural Dyeing is using roots, flowers, berries, leaves, fruits, seeds, bark, heartwood, nut kernels or anything that grows to obtain a colour on woollen fibre or yarn.  The course can be specific so we could use 3 natural dyestuffs indigenous to the UK OR use 3 different natural dyestuffs from hotter climates.  Before dyeing, the fibre needs to be mordanted (fixed) so that the dye is fixed into the fibre and not just a stain that will wash out. You will be shown how to use 3 different mordants, according to your requirements.   The mordanting and dyeing procedure will be fully explained, as well as health and safety issues addressed.

Price: £100.00 per person. (£25 per hour)

If you are interested in this or any other course, please contact Sue to discuss your requirements.

After a fun morning dyeing fleece in a microwave using Easy Peasy Dyes, these were the results I achieved. Note my notebook - an essential tool for the dyer!
